Yale M.D. shares skin protection tips for summer-like weather


NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (WTNH) — We’ve been waiting all winter long to be able to get outside and enjoy the pleasant temperatures.

Whether you’re hitting the beach or just taking a walk, you should try to protect your skin, says Kathleen Suozzi, a dermatologist at Yale University School of Medicine.


“We often see the worst tans at the beginning of the season when we think we don’t need to be so careful about sun protection. The UV index looks pretty high this weekend,” she said. .

Dr Suozzi says the sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Dr. Suozzi says skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in humans.

She recommends people use sunscreen with SPF 30 and reapply every two hours.

When applying sunscreen, she says, remember to cover all areas that may be exposed to the sun. This includes the ears and hairline, which are areas where skin cancer is most likely to occur, especially in women.

Dr. Suozzi said patients may even have skin cancer on their feet.

She says she doesn’t like whether her patients wear spray or lotion sunscreen. She tells her patients to buy clothes to wear.

If the patient wears a spray sunscreen, it is recommended that it be purchased without aerosols. Spray sunscreens contain benzene, a chemical that is toxic to humans.

Consumers can also choose sunscreens with physical barriers, such as zinc- and titanium-based versions. These types of sunscreens act like a shield that sits on top of your skin to reflect UV rays.

It’s not like the “chemical sunscreens,” which she also recommends. Dr. Suozzi says he prefers shield-based versions for children because they show up in the bloodstream.

“Avoiding systemic absorption may be more important in young children, so be sure to use mineral-based products for young children,” she said.
