David Lee has been appointed as the new Director and General Manager of Milwaukee’s NPR, WUWM 89.7 FM. He joined his WUWM as a broadcaster, and the NPR Networks ecosystem continues the important work of leveraging its longstanding strengths while seeking innovative ways to reach new audiences. . Lee will succeed John Hess, where from 2020 he was General Manager of WUWM.
Lee is well known in Milwaukee for his work in the nonprofit sector. He came to his WUWM from the Ascension He Wisconsin Foundation, where he served as chief philanthropic officer, and Milwaukee Safety He led the philanthropic efforts of the Net Hospital System. Prior to his role at Ascension, he was the first CEO of Imagine MKE, harnessing the power of Milwaukee’s arts and cultural community to advocate for a more prosperous and vibrant neighborhood. Prior to Imagine MKE, he was the Founding Executive Director of Feeding Wisconsin, where he helped expand statewide collaborations with regional food banks in Wisconsin.
As General Manager of WUWM, Lee will provide leadership and vision for a public radio station delivering local and national news coverage and cultural programming to 102,000 listeners each week in southeastern Wisconsin. WUWM is an audience-funded radio station licensed by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Trustees and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Letters & Sciences.

Lee will begin his term as General Manager on March 27, 2023.
