Wiregrass Receives Over $400,000 in Grants to Healthcare Workers

Wireglass Georgia Tech was awarded a $407,000 Georgia Medical Board Workforce Grant. This grant will allow the university to increase the number of nurse graduates. Earlier this year, the university announced the expansion of its Nursing Science Associate Program to its Coffee Campus and Ben Hill Irwin Campus. The ASN program will begin at the Coffee Campus in Fall 2023 and at the Ben Hill Irwin Campus in Fall 2024. Each cohort receives her 30 students, who complete the program four semesters after entering the program.

This grant will fund support for the university’s efforts in expanding the nursing workforce by establishing full-time faculty, state-of-the-art laboratory experiences, and modern program teaching methods and resources. This facility and funding will ensure a state-of-the-art nursing laboratory for additional ASN faculty to provide optimal nursing education. NCLEX resources help with pedagogy updates in nursing programs and professional development for her NCLEX updates for faculty.

“There is a critical nurse shortage in South Georgia, and Wireglass is working closely with our medical partners to fill this gap. campuses, allowing prospective students to enroll in an ASN program closer to home,” said April McDuffie, Wireglass’ executive vice president of academic affairs.

The university recently announced that its RN program was named the number one program in Georgia in its second year, according to NursingProcess.org. This is based on the student’s performance against her NCLEX acceptance rate of 100% in 2022. Wiregrass already offers her traditional ASN program at its Valdosta campus. A Nursing Transition Program, or Bridge Program, designed to prepare Licensed Nurses (LPNs) and Paramedics as registered nurses, is also offered at the Valdosta campus.

Both the ASN and Practice Nursing (LPN) programs are accredited through the Accreditation Commission for Nursing Education (ACEN) and Wireglass is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission (SACSCOC). Wiregrass offers a Technical College Certificate (TCC) and nursing admissions process to help address the shortage of nurses and certified nursing assistants.

The university is currently accepting applications for the Summer Express term, and classes will begin on May 31st. For those considering enrolling for the fall semester, the university is hosting a free application week from June 12-16. The application fee will be waived for those who apply for the fall semester that week. The fall semester will begin on August 15, 2023. Interested students can apply in person at the One-Stop Enrollment and Success Center or apply online at www.wiregrass.edu. All dual enrollment students are exempt from the application fee.
