Why are patients turning to artificial intelligence chatbots for medical advice?

BALTIMORE — The future of medicine may have arrived sooner than expected, and patients are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for medical advice.

People are increasingly willing to seek information and advice online. With this trend in mind, Johns Hopkins University conducted a recent study comparing medical responses from real doctors with responses generated by Chat GPT, an AI chatbot.

Dr. Mark Dredze, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University and one of the brains behind the study, said the most impressive part was the detail Chat GPT was able to put into its response. I was. He said AI chatbots aren’t better than doctors, but they did have time to come up with answers, unlike human doctors who would have to put in extra effort to write out their answers in detail.

The study showed that Chat GPT not only performed better, but was rated more favorably than physician responses. Dr. Dredze said his Chat GPT’s success in this study shows that people are using his AI chatbot for health and medical questions.

“We wanted to test how useful it would be in the medical field,” he said.

The results of this study sound promising, but not everyone thinks so.

Matt Hollingsworth, CEO and co-founder of Carta Healthcare, says Chat GPT is great at decapitating complex concepts and getting creative, but there’s no measure of getting it right. This can be a big problem in medical settings.

Hollingsworth warns against using AI to diagnose oneself without consulting a doctor. However, he agrees with his Dr. Dredze that AI can be used to help doctors do a better job.

“That way they can spend more time with us and be better communicators, which is great,” he said. “It has many advantages.”

Chat GPT isn’t the only AI technology being used in the healthcare industry. AI chatbots and virtual assistants help doctors with everyday tasks like scheduling appointments, ordering tests, and checking patient histories. AI can also help analyze patient data to detect patterns and provide personalized treatment plans.

However, like any technology, there are concerns about AI accuracy and reliability. Hollingsworth emphasized that AI chatbots should not replace doctors, but rather help them.

“The model we see here is not to replace doctors with this technology, but that AI can be used to help doctors do a better job,” he said.

Just because Chat GPT gives good answers doesn’t mean you should rely on medical advice. It is always important to consult a licensed medical professional for any health concerns.

But the findings open up new ways AI can be used in medicine to help doctors do their jobs. As AI technology continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, it has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry and improve patient care.
