No one fully understands why the U.S. Space Force, the youngest, smallest, weirdest branch of the Pentagon, exists.
Surprisingly, it seems that some of the military’s top generals are among them. Politico report. In an email sent to all Guardians, the unfortunate name given to the staff, Space Operations Director Chance Saltzman expressed his confusion.
“There are some concerns about our current mission statement,” he wrote. Politico. “My biggest concern is that the mission statement does not reflect why this country has a Space Force and the critical function the Guardians serve.”
The memo shows that there is still a lot of disagreement over the purpose of the military sector, but given that the Biden administration is calling for a $30 billion 2024 budget to fund the entire mess, this does not bode well.

Overall, the General’s memo seems to indicate that the Space Force is still struggling to find answers to some very basic questions. And considering the sheer amount of resources required to keep it running, this doesn’t bode well.
