No one fully understands why the U.S. Space Force, the youngest, smallest, weirdest branch of the Pentagon, exists.

Surprisingly, it seems that some of the military’s top generals are among them. Politico report. In an email sent to all Guardians, the unfortunate name given to the staff, Space Operations Director Chance Saltzman expressed his confusion.

“There are some concerns about our current mission statement,” he wrote. Politico. “My biggest concern is that the mission statement does not reflect why this country has a Space Force and the critical function the Guardians serve.”

The memo shows that there is still a lot of disagreement over the purpose of the military sector, but given that the Biden administration is calling for a $30 billion 2024 budget to fund the entire mess, this does not bode well.

Created by the Trump administration three years ago, the Space Force is already struggling to maintain its image and be taken seriously, especially considering the Netflix-produced comedy TV show of the same name.

According to its current mission statement, established in December 2019, the Space Force is “responsible for organizing, training, and equipping Guardians to conduct global space operations that enhance the way the Joint and Coalition Forces fight. It will also provide military support to decision-makers.” Options for achieving national goals. ”

Saltzman, however, determined that the statement was flawed and did not fully represent the Guardian’s responsibilities.

“Parents provide competence,” he wrote in the note. “The Guardian operates some of the most technologically advanced systems in the world that will deter aggression and, should deterrence fail, use military force to protect U.S. interests.”

“Furthermore, our current mission statement is long and cumbersome,” he added. “We should be able to do better.”

Worst of all, Saltzman’s solution to this thorny problem was to crowdsource new mission statements from the Guardians, the Spacey Maxspace Force, anyone?

Overall, the General’s memo seems to indicate that the Space Force is still struggling to find answers to some very basic questions. And considering the sheer amount of resources required to keep it running, this doesn’t bode well.
