Top Guardians prospect underwent shoulder surgery, out 12-14 months

Dr. Neal ElAtrrache performed anterior capsule repair surgery on a 22-year-old right-handed patient. The recovery time for such procedures is typically one year or more. Major League pitchers at his level who have recovered from similar surgeries include Johann Santana (2010), Chris Young (2010), Rich Harden (2012), and Dallas Braden (2011). Most recently, Dodgers lefty Julio Urias underwent surgery and returned with good results.

Harris said Espino had accelerated his pitching progress after transitioning from plyometrics to playing catch and experiencing symptoms again. ElAttrache is a Dallas-based surgeon who specializes in the treatment and research of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries.

Espino first reported shoulder pain during a pitching session in January. A strained rotator cuff and a torn anterior capsule were evident through testing.

MLB Pipeline rated Espino 16th on its top 100 2023 preseason prospects. Baseball America ranked him 19th among the top 100, and Keith Law of The Athletic ranked him 33rd.

Last season, the 6-foot-2-inch, 225-pound Espino started just four games for Class AA Akron before shutting down. He was shelved due to patellar tendonitis in his left knee and pain in his right shoulder.In these four starts, Espino struck out his 35 and in 18 1/3 innings he walked four. I was.
