President Joe Biden has named an Air Force general to head America’s powerful electronic espionage agency and U.S. military command, which will conduct offensive cyber operations. This is a key position as the United States continues to battle Russia, China and other adversaries in cyberspace.

Timothy, who has held senior cyber positions in the U.S. military for many years, has been appointed commander of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command to replace outgoing Army General Paul Nakasone, an Air Force official confirmed to CNN.・It is Lieutenant General Ho.

Politico was the first to report Ho’s nomination.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Ho’s nomination could face a roadblock in the Senate after Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama withheld the military nomination because he opposes the department’s abortion travel policy.

Mr. Ho is currently a lieutenant in the U.S. Cyber Command, which consists of thousands of U.S. military personnel who conduct offensive and defensive cyber operations to protect America’s critical infrastructure. Officials from his command will travel to Ukraine in late 2021 to prepare Kiev for an onslaught of Russian cyberattacks following a full-scale Russian invasion.

The command and the NSA have also played an increasingly active role in defending American elections against foreign interference over the past five years under Nakasone’s leadership.

During the 2020 election, Iranian hackers accessed U.S. government websites to report unofficial election results, and cyber forces networked the hackers out of concern they could post fake results on the websites. A senior U.S. military official said last month.

Ho’s appointment signals a continued focus on election security operations at Fort Meade, Maryland’s sprawling military base, home to the NSA and Cyber Command. As a senior U.S. military cyber officer, Ho has been involved in election security debates during the recent midterm and general elections.
