HENDERSON, Nevada — Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo underwent surgery on an injured left leg after signing a free agency contract with the team in March, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
“Everything is trending great,” said the source.
Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with Las Vegas on March 17, but his joining press conference was delayed by a day.
“He’s going through the process we expected,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said. “Based on the information we have, nothing has happened that would surprise us.”
McDaniels did not elaborate on whether Garoppolo underwent surgery or not, but The Athletic first reported it.
McDaniels said there were no surprises and only that the QB won’t be on the field when OTA practice begins. However, he has allowed Garoppolo to miss the start of training camp.
Garoppolo was injured last season in Week 13 with the San Francisco 49ers and did not return.
Texas Tech Edge Rusher first-round pick Tyree Wilson, who was the seventh overall pick in last month’s draft, is also out, undergoing rehab on his right leg, which was surgically repaired on Nov. 12.
“We know we haven’t played a game in over 100 days, so they’re doing everything they can to move in the right direction,” McDaniels said. “And when they’re all ready to leave, they’ll eventually be back on the field.
“Some things may be ready before the end of spring, others may not be, and we always make the mistake of being wise this time of year. ..Hurry up to get it and say, “It’s a bad decision to play in May. We’re doing everything in football they can to not endanger anyone’s ability.”
