Iowa City — The Chief Executive Officer of the University of Illinois School of Medicine and Health System is the second of two finalists, succeeding Brooks Jackson as vice president for medical affairs at the University of Iowa Health Care and president of the Carver College of Medicine .
Mark I. Rosenblatt has been with the University of Illinois Health System since 2014, initially as a Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science. He visits the UI He campus on Mondays and Tuesdays from noon to 1:00 pm on Mondays.
His visit comes a week after the campus welcomed the first nominated finalist for the job.Denise Jamieson is professor and chair of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine and Emory Health Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Care. Jamieson also spent nearly 20 years with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Rosenblatt has served as Dean of the University of Illinois School of Medicine since 2019 and Vice President of the University of Illinois School of Health since 2022. He is also Chair of Ophthalmology Research and Professor of Ophthalmology and Vision Science.
Prior to coming to the Midwest, Rosenblatt served as Vice Chair and Director of the Ophthalmology and Vision Research Institutes, respectively, at Cornell University’s Cornell College of Medicine.
After graduating from the University of Miami, Florida with a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree, and a master’s degree in business from New York University’s Stern School of Business, he received his master’s degree from the University of Illinois School of Public Health in 2017.
His scientific research focuses on investigating corneal peripheral nerve regeneration after injury and the use of nanoengineered biomaterials for stem cell delivery to the ocular surface.
The search committee appointed to replace Jackson, who has agreed to remain until his successor arrives, will collect public feedback on its website.
This is the university’s second attempt to find a new vice-president of medical affairs and the dean of the medical college after the finalists selected in the initial search turned down the offer.
An initial search brought four finalists to campus in August. It’s a combination of her two women and her two men who offer a variety of medical and administrative experiences, from Dartmouth, New Hampshire, to the University of North Carolina, the University of Chicago and the University of Nebraska.
UIHC officials did not share which of these initial finalists declined the job offer “due to family obligations,” but administrators reopened the search in December.
Jackson, who joined UI Healthcare in late 2017 after establishing himself as an internationally recognized AIDS researcher, stepped down more than a year ago in February 2022 with plans to assume a faculty role. announced that his UIHC salary in March was $1.1 million.

Rosenblatt will meet with faculty, staff, students, shared governance, and campus leadership during campus visits on May 8 and 9. He will participate in an open forum on Monday from noon to 1:00 pm at the 2117 Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF).
