Republican Senator Bill Cassidy Says Trump Can’t Win the General Election

(CNN) Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy said on Sunday that he doubts Donald Trump will win the general election, raising hopes for Republicans in last year’s midterm elections when several candidates backed by the former president lost. Pointed out the outlier performance.

“The president’s massive endorsement of these candidates is actually hurting them, at least in the general election. We can’t win the general election,” he told Jake Tupper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Senate Republican candidates in key battleground states such as Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Georgia were able to use President Trump’s endorsement to win primaries, but they failed to do so in November. The former president is now seen as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Cassidy, one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump in the second impeachment trial in 2021, is expected to enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination this week on Sunday. He also commented on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The New York Times reported last week that DeSantis told donors and supporters in a phone call that there were only three credible candidates for the 2024 election: himself, President Joe Biden, and Trump. He said he and Biden were the only ones with a chance to do so. election.

Cassidy, while agreeing with the governor about Trump, dismissed the comment as a “competitor trying to diss people.”

“I don’t think Trump can win the general election, but this is a good way for him to diss people like Tim Scott, who is a pretty formidable candidate,” he said.

Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, has filed papers to run for president, which will be formally announced Monday in his home state of South Carolina.
