OSU Launches First-of-its-kind Athletic Training – Sports Medicine ECHO

Athletic trainers and sports medicine providers in schools across the state have a new resource to seek professional guidance

In partnership with the Oklahoma State University Human Performance and Nutrition Institute (HPNRI), the OSU Center for Health Sciences launched the Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Project ECHO Line on Wednesday.

“Developed in partnership with OSU’s Institute for Human Performance and Nutrition, this new ECHO line will enable us to support healthcare providers caring for student-athletes across the state,” said Johnny, OSU-CHS President. Dr. Stevens said “More than half of Oklahoma counties have zero athletic trainers or sports medicine professionals to support the health and well-being of young athletes.

“The goal is to share therapeutically specific knowledge to help student-athletes reduce injury and stay active and healthy. We thank the Tobacco Settlement Fund Trust (TSET) for providing OSU-CHS with $4.5 million in funding to help more health care providers and physicians across the state to improve health outcomes. Project ECHO provides best-practice medical care to patients who might not normally get it because of where they live. Rather than moving people, Project ECHO uses a hub-and-spoke telementoring model to move knowledge, so local primary care providers have access to expertise to deliver high-quality care to patients in their communities. The new ECHO line, the first ever focused on athletic training, will be delivered to athletic trainers and sports medicine providers in schools across the state, offering virtual mentoring from experts in athletic training, sports medicine, counseling and nutrition. Athletic Training – Sports Medicine ECHO is held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from noon to 1:00 pm. His new ECHO will include athletic trainers, athletic directors, coaches, nurses, nursing practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, local physicians, school administrators, and everyone involved in the care of student-athletes. Participants will learn best practices in identifying, mitigating, and treating sports-related injuries to keep student-athletes active, healthy, and facilitate their return to competition. In addition, participants will learn about policy implementation and management strategies to improve outcomes, sustainability, and quality of life across Oklahoma. Participants are encouraged to submit cases to her ECHO team of experts. A team of experts will review cases and provide feedback, best practices, and educational resources that can be implemented to improve student-athlete care. Athletic trainers also have the opportunity to earn continuing education credits.

HPNRI is led by Lance Walker, executive director of Rick and Gail Muncrief. A licensed physiotherapist and internationally recognized expert in the fusion of sports performance, sports science and sports medicine, Walker has seen significant changes in the industry over the past 30 years.
