NATO Under-Secretary-General Mircea Joana speaks at the NATO parliamentary spring session in Luxembourg on Monday (May 22, 2023). The Deputy Secretary-General thanked Luxembourg for its contribution to NATO, especially in space surveillance and satellite capabilities, and for its strong support to Ukraine.
The Deputy Secretary-General reiterated NATO’s commitment to strengthening deterrence and defense in a more dangerous and competitive world. “NATO will meet this challenge,” he said, adding: “We will conduct more joint training and exercises, deploy more responsive forces, and strengthen our command and control structure.”
Emphasizing that security is the foundation of prosperity, Joana said, “There is no freedom without security, peace and prosperity. Now is the time to invest in our values, in NATO and of course in many other ways.” That’s why I count on your support.”
About 274 parliamentarians from 31 NATO allies, plus about 100 representatives from about 25 partner countries and parliamentary bodies, will participate in this year’s NATO parliamentary spring meeting.
