Augusta, GA (WJBF)- A medical marijuana dispensary may be on its way to Augusta.
The Georgia company gave a presentation to the entire committee last week. The Secretary of Plant Science told commissioners last week about the benefits of having a pharmacy in Augusta.
Medical cannabis is legal in Georgia and medical cannabis is legal. It’s a patient registry state for low-THC oils, meaning a patient with a prescription can buy and carry 20 ounces or less of the oil.
Medical cannabis treats the symptoms of diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and seizure disorders.
Secretary Tony Lewis said it was time to allow pharmacies to open.
“It’s legal. It’s medical. It’s for medical use. And it can’t be — the doctor has to give you a prescription. No, but they would have to do it according to the prescription they were given.”
There are currently only two pharmacies in Georgia. One in Marietta and one in Macon. The third is under development with a puller.
Lewis believes his fellow commissioners will approve the new project if the vote goes through.
“Any business that comes into this city has to apply. It has to be planned and zoned. And since it’s legal and medical cannabis, I don’t think there’s a problem with it actually going through.”
Further discussion on the matter will take place after the company submits its application to the Planning Commission.
