New Changes to Federal Healthcare Require Residents to Be Proactive

Cheyenne, Wyoming – Several Wyoming residents recently lost their Medicaid coverage as part of the Medicaid redefinition that began April 1. Eligible individuals may be able to find low-cost health insurance coverage for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming (BCBSWY) through Healthcare.gov. During the Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

The current SEP for those who have lost their Medicaid coverage has been extended through July 31, 2024, allowing eligible consumers to purchase health insurance. BCBSWY encourages people who have lost coverage to learn about SEP options to enroll in new low-cost plans or consider whether the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is right for their family. Most people who lost coverage due to Medicaid redetermination can receive significant cost savings through the federal health insurance marketplace.

Many Wyoming households are losing Medicaid coverage as federal funding allocated to fight COVID-19 expires. Congress created incentives for states to continue enrolling in Medicaid during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE), rather than continually requalifying or discontinuing coverage. . Under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, states are now allowed to resume Medicaid redetermination to exclude ineligibles as the public health emergency ends.

Additionally, COVID-19 vaccination and testing are exempt from the declared public health emergency until May 11. BCBSWY has 100% coverage for COVID-19 vaccination as a preventative medical benefit. Testing for the diagnosis of COVID-19 is covered by health insurance, per benefit plan. BCBSWY encourages Wyoming residents to recognize these changes.

“New Medicaid redeterminations and the end of the public health emergency can disrupt people.BCBSWY is here to help everyone understand their healthcare options. said Diane Gore, President and CEO of BCBSWY. “We want to keep people covered and we believe education is key. I have.”
