Medical Evaluation Board | Health Mill

A medical review board is a process designed to determine whether a military member’s long-term medical condition can continue to meet medical retention standards in accordance with military service regulations. It also provides the opportunity for military physicians to clearly document all care and treatment received prior to referral to MEB and any limitations of duty that their condition may cause.

The MEB is considered an informal board as it does not drive any personnel action by itself. The MEB findings are referred to the Physical Evaluation Board, which formally determines suitability for continued employment and eligibility for disability coverage. The MEB is convened when a decision point of medical hold is reached or when a physician determines that the military member cannot return to duty for medical reasons. The Board will assess the military’s medical history and condition, document the extent of injury or illness, and determine whether the military’s medical condition is severe enough to interfere with the ability to continue full duty.

Entering the MEB process does not automatically discharge military personnel from military service. The MEB will refer a service member to her PEB if the findings and recommendations stipulate one of the following:

  1. service member does not meet retention criteria, or
  2. Military personnel must return to service with a different military occupational specialization/military classification.

Everyone should understand the entire Board process, as MEB decisions may affect military personnel and families. To achieve the best results, it is essential to have all documents and necessary medical information ready before the board meeting.
