The pandemic hiatus did not break the now 80-year streak of hosting events dedicated to highlighting student work at HMS. His first research, organized in 1940 by his five-member faculty committee, including Soma Wyeth, was renamed in honor of Wyeth after his death in 1942.
“Thoma Weiss, who was named after him, was not only a leading researcher, clinician and role model, but a beloved teacher and mentor to HMS students,” said Hundert. I’m here.
Myron Belfer, HMS Professor of Psychiatry at Boston Children’s Hospital and one of the poster judges, said: “And the rigor of doing research is a good discipline for students.”
Connect with patients through research
HMS student Amina Ziad has studied a long-lasting, painful skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa, which affects three times as many women as men and disproportionately affects women of color. rice field.
“For me, the best thing about doing this research was being able to really connect with patients,” said Ziad. “Connections with people are the foundation of my medicine and research.”
HMS student Carson Moss focuses on home hospital care delivery models and how they affect patient care and caregiver burden.
“Growing up with a sick family member and seeing them taken care of is a place closer to home for me,” he said.
“This is something I keep in mind when I see patients and their caregivers in the hospital,” Moss said. I remain excited about.”
family connection
As a special tradition of Soma Weiss Research Day, some members of the Weiss family often attend the gathering.
“We are really excited to have him [Weiss’s] Daughter-in-law, Joyce DeBona, zoomed in. She comes here almost every year, but this year she’s in Florida,” Hundert said.
“On behalf of my family, I just want to say thank you for putting on such an amazing event,” Devona said on Zoom. “It was a special tribute to my father-in-law and my late husband. thank you.”
