Maine Central Institute International Student Food Festival

Pittsfield, Maine — The Maine Central Laboratory held its annual International Food Festival on Sunday.

International boarders, representing about 20 countries, cooked meals and shared them with the local community.

“I feel the need to share my culture from Vietnam to everywhere so that everyone can understand Vietnamese food,” said MCI student Tu Phinh.

Huynh immigrated from Vietnam eight months ago. She and her friends made Vietnamese pancakes stuffed with pork for the festival. She was a little nervous to join at first, but she admitted that she was proud to see the positive feedback from her members in the community.

“I’m nervous, so I’m always really happy. For example, do people enjoy Vietnamese food, like Americans do? Because the food here is a little different,” she said. rice field.

But that’s what makes MCI so unique, according to MCI’s principal, David Pearson. MCI has students from 23 countries, Pearson said.

“One of the hallmarks of MCI is diversity, because every day we have a mix of students from all over the world and local students who come from our local communities,” Pearson said. . “It breaks down ethnocentric prejudices. They understand each other’s history and culture, and they can discuss it in the classroom or in a group of friends.”

The International Food Festival has been a long-standing tradition at MCI since 2007, according to event organizer Arthur Fass.

“This is our way for our boarders to show their appreciation to the community and share the culture and food,” Fass said.
