“It was great to see an open heart surgery. It’s something I probably won’t be able to do again, so I’m really grateful to have had this experience. The doctors were so impressive and skilled during the surgery. ”

Josie: KHS Senior

“I saw that operation and thought that doing something like that might be my future job. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have realized I wanted to be involved in it.” prize.”

Caleb: KHS Junior

“It was very nice to have the wonderful opportunity to see open heart surgery and it was very rewarding. It’s certainly interesting work, stories bring visions to life in our minds, but being able to be there and experience them opens up even more to the medical field. ”

Kyrie: KHS Junior

“Visiting an open heart surgery site was certainly an eye-opening experience. The staff were very friendly and professional, which made me want to pursue a career in the medical field. It was a pretty cool experience to see it slow down, stop, and eventually restart the heart. To be honest, if I could go again, I would!”

Allison: KHS Junior

“I am so grateful to have had such a wonderful experience. I didn’t expect to see it, but I was so happy to see it. I didn’t know you could do bypass surgery using your leg veins.” Also the titanium wire used to close the sternum is permanent.Overall this is one of the coolest things I’ve witnessed so far I can say without a doubt, and if I could watch it again, I would. The doctors did an amazing job and I feel very fortunate to be one of the students who went through this. I think. Thank you.”

Mariah: KHS Junior

“It was a lot of fun to watch the heart surgery at Allegheny General Hospital. The guide was very helpful in answering questions about what was done during the surgery and was very friendly, I was a little surprised to see the surgery in action as it looked a lot like the cat we dissected in class. It was like a “light bulb” moment when what I had learned on paper was put into practice right in front of my eyes. It was a great opportunity and I would love to do it again. “

Sam: KHS Junior

“Being present at heart surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh was an experience I never thought I would be personally present. I’ve done the job many times. They never seemed to be concerned, and they didn’t falter when doctors were covered in blood. It’s a little unsettling to see a live human chest open. It’s an interesting sight, I didn’t know they would take a vein out of a patient’s leg and use it for a bypass, when you see how much rags they’ve used and how much blood they’ve lost. , it was a lot more than I expected.Seeing them put the breasts back together with titanium wires was something I didn’t expect to see, but to fuse the bones together. Overall, I loved the trip and enjoyed my time there.”

Morgan: KHS Junior

“When I first entered the hospital, I had mixed feelings about what I was about to witness. I want to be a cardiovascular perfusionist and going to see this surgery gave me a good chance to think about whether I want to continue this work. So if you have the chance to visit a place like this, I highly recommend it.”
