“Being selected for this honor is a testament to the agency and program’s continued advocacy and support for underrepresented medical students,” Graham said. “Knowing that I was recommended by my faculty and then accepted into the ElevateMeD Scholars program means a lot to me. The 29-year-old Detroit resident is considering jobs in areas such as primary care, critical care, and oncology.

He chose WSU for his medical education because the medical school is “known for its clinical excellence in an urban environment, and this environment, or one like it, is one that I am confident that I will continue to work in.” Because we want to develop further,” he said. Please develop my career. ”

ElevateMeD is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarship, mentorship, leadership training, and financial management education to future physicians of African American, Latino, and Native American backgrounds. The Scholars program aims to increase the diversity of the physician workforce and improve the cultural competence of physicians to reduce health disparities.

Graham said he became interested in medicine after realizing the prevalence of chronic disease in his community. “Later, during my undergraduate years, I became more aware of the deteriorating health conditions of certain communities and ethnic groups, and of the social determinants of health associated with them. And we need to know how to prevent them and also how to ‘cure’ them,” he added.
