Hialeah police officer recovers after being run over by man on motorcycle

Hialeah — A Hialeah police officer was injured early Sunday morning after attempting to stop motorcycle traffic in the East Fourth and 49th Streets area.

Authorities said the officer approached the motorcycle and the man on the motorcycle sped towards him and hit him.

The man abandoned his motorcycle and fled to a nearby residential area. A perimeter was quickly set up and a man identified as Roberto Ortiz, a 36-year-old Miami resident, was found and taken into custody, police said.

Hialeah police said in their records that the motorcycle was reported stolen from the city of Miami.

Police said the injured officer suffered a broken knee and torn ligaments and was taken to Jackson Ryder Trauma Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Ortiz has been charged with grand theft of a vehicle and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

He appeared in court on Monday and a judge set bail at $30,000. He was also ordered to appear before another judge on Tuesday because the crimes he allegedly committed were committed while he was on probation.
