Lapeer, Michigan – Hernandez Mexican Food will have its long-awaited grand opening in Lapeer.
After more than 50 years serving the local community as a street food vendor, Hernandez Mexican Food has moved to a former office building in downtown Lapeer (located at 4 E. Nepessing St.) and operates as a takeout only business.
The grand opening is Saturday, May 20th from 11am to 7pm.
“This is another step in our journey,” business owner Zach Shroud told MLive-The Flint Journal. “Without the support of our families and communities, none of this would have happened.”
Zach’s wife, Diana Hernandez-Shroud, is a co-owner of the new business.
The business started many years ago when Hernandez Shroud’s grandmother, Adelina Gutierrez, cooked lunches for migrant field workers.
Hernandez Shroud’s father, Ernesto Hernandez, took over in the 1980s and turned the store into a successful community stall.
About ten years ago, both Zach and Deanna took ownership.
Shroud said he secured a lease for the building in October 2022.
“This was a lot more work than we initially thought,” Shroud said.
Shroud’s father-in-law is from Texas, so the restaurant serves “Texas” Mexican food.
“We want people to understand that we are a Tex-Mex based restaurant,” he said. “We’re not from Mexico. My father-in-law is from San Antonio. Our recipes are Tex-Mex-based. This is who we are.”
Hard and soft tacos, burritos, nachos, and enchiladas are offered. The menu has also been expanded to include weekly specials with additional authentic Mexican dishes.
Hernandez Mexican Food is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM.
