The first operation was performed at this hospital on Thursday.
14 year old girl from CalicutThe SMA, who has been confined to a wheelchair for the past 11 years, underwent surgery on Thursday. In a complex eight-hour operation, the vertebrae of the spine were fixed with titanium rods to straighten the curvature of the spine. The girl is said to be recovering now. The surgery was performed by specialists with special training in orthopedics, anesthesiology and nursing.
This has made the operation, which would cost about 1.5 million rupees in the private sector, cheaper. However, the girl’s surgery from Calicut was completely free under the government’s health insurance scheme.
Minister of Health Vina George congratulated the entire medical school hospital team on their surgery.
