Food patrol asks staff about code violation, Mercedes police show up


MERCEDES (ValleyCentral), TX — Blackbeards’ Restaurant on South Padre Island is this week’s Top Performer at Food 4 Thought.

Senior Researcher Derrick Garcia visits this week Ke Rico The restaurant will surprise staff with a top performer sticker based on 100 points on the December 1st health check report.

The crew earned it years ago after seeing the Food 4 Thought Top Performer recognition.

For longtime staff members James and Billie Jean, this is a proud moment. For his 25 years, James has been serving cocktails, margaritas and beers behind the bar.

The former top performer in March 2013 was ousted after a decade.

The Danny’s Cafe at 246 South Texas Avenue in Mercedes failed an inspection on November 4.

A food patrol came out of the blue to see what they could do to restore owner Marie Elena to her former glory, but she wasn’t there.

When our crew showed up before 3pm, the kitchen staff had already closed.

Before closing time, the staff called the Mercedes police.

“All they said was that you scared them and they weren’t sure whether to believe you,” the officer said.

The food patrol did not return and Marie did not reach out to our newsroom for further information. Danny passed the retest.
