OKLAHOMA CITY—A new bill created by Oklahoma Representative Anthony Moore, R-Clinton, was signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt. House Bill 1542 aims to remove civil liability from school cafeterias and restaurants who wish to donate leftover food.
According to Rep. Moore, the lack of protection from civil lawsuits so far has prevented restaurants and school cafeterias from donating “perfectly good food.”
However, organizations that “willfully or negligently donate spoiled food” are exempt from the protections under this law.
“While many seniors, individuals and families are living with food insecurity, restaurants and school cafeterias feel they have no choice but to ditch nutritious and delicious food,” the bill in the Senate.
HB1542 was signed on April 19th and will enter into force on November 1st.
