Emma Raducanu will miss the French Open and Wimbledon as she has “minor” surgery on her hands and left ankle after suffering long-term injuries.
On Wednesday, Radukhanu underwent the first of three scheduled surgeries on his right hand, after which he posted a handwritten statement on social media along with a photo of himself in a cast from his hospital bed.
“It’s fair to say the last 10 months have been tough because I’ve had multiple bone injuries in both hands,” Radukhanu said. I did my best, dramatically reducing my practice load, missing weeks of training, and shortening my last season to try and heal, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”
Raducanu will be out of competition for several months. In addition to missing Laurent’s Garros and his Wimbledon in July, which starts later this month, the 2021 US Open champion is unlikely to return in time for the US Open in late August. . Raducanu plans to resume activities later this year, but will only do so when ready.
At a press conference prior to the Madrid Open last week, Radukanu looked lonely as he attempted to qualify for the WTA 1000 event, before announcing his withdrawal from the tournament the following day due to a wrist injury. Missing out meant she would be out of the top 100 next week, 20 months after winning a U.S. Open qualifier without dropping a set.
After making a dramatic breakthrough in the summer of 2021, things have clearly not gone well for Radukanu. Her main problem was a constant string of injuries as she tried to adapt to the rigors of professional tennis. He suffered a side injury in his first few games at Nottingham and was barely able to make it to Wimbledon.
Most recently, Radukhanu has struggled with a hand injury that forced him to pull out of the final of the Billie Jean King Cup at the end of last year and cut his season short. In my first tournament of the season, I rolled my ankle during a match. Her left ankle surgery addresses an injury she sustained in New Zealand.
Before each tournament, Radukhanu continues to describe himself as simply “managing” various injuries, always limiting his time on the practice court between tournaments. For convenience, she has consistently described the ailment as an injury to her wrist, but the specific issue was her bone problem on the back of her hand.
Raducanu’s inconsistent preparation is reflected in her results. She compiled her 15-16 losing record in the last 52 weeks. Only one win streak this year. Even when she advanced to her fourth round at Wells in March and beat two of her top-20 seeds in her fifth-biggest tournament of the year, Radukhanu suffered a hand injury. And I didn’t have confidence to stand on the court due to the virus infection. “When it rains, it rains heavily,” she said.
The prospect of three surgeries and months on the sidelines is far from an ideal outcome for the 20-year-old who is just beginning his career, but Radukhanu’s absence may ultimately be a silver lining. .
The amount of her injuries and her results underscored that entering a half-prepared tournament against the best players in the world was not enough. You will have unlimited WTA wildcards in your
Meanwhile, Raducanu’s demeanor in Madrid underscored her frustration. It was especially tricky for someone who experienced little hype and media coverage prior to her breakthrough.
Radukanu concluded, “It hurts me to miss the summer event and I tried to downplay the issue. Thank you to all the fans who have continued to support me when I didn’t know the facts.”
A permanent solution to her physical ailments is needed, not only through surgery, but also by ensuring she is fully physically prepared for the Tour when she returns. After taking a break from the rigorous tours and enjoying a period on the sidelines where they don’t travel every week and just focus on sports, they often find their careers and perspectives refreshed.
One of the most important elements of a positive comeback is returning when a player is physically and mentally fully ready to resume their career, rather than hitting the deadline for the upcoming major event. That’s it. More complex decisions will be made in the future.
