Driving change in medical education

In 2013, the AMA launched the landmark Accelerating Change in Medical Education initiative. This is an ambitious effort to rebuild medical education from the ground up. Through close collaboration with a consortium of 37 medical schools and 11 AMA Reimaging Residency grant teams, this initiative will catalyze change, empowering the entire medical education community to build systems to train doctors to meet the needs of today’s patients. I urged them to work towards it. and anticipate future changes.

In 2023, under the leadership of Group Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Sanjay Desai, M.D., the AMA will place a new level of strategic focus on four priority areas in medical education.

  • Competency-based medical education (CBME)
  • Equity, diversity and belonging
  • precision education
  • transitions across the continuum

As part of its evolution, the program streamlined its name, but not its mission or future vision.through the new AMA ChangeMedEd® InitiativeThrough investments in new partnerships and exploratory pilots, AMA is focused on developing the foundational properties of precision education and its real-world applications.

Building on AMA’s decade-long work in CBME, Transition and Equity, Diversity and Belonging, this work will help lay the groundwork for future applications in precision education. This effort will be facilitated comprehensively through the formation of a new foundation team, distribution of innovation grants to major medical educational institutions across the country, and focused engagement with other grant teams associated with the AMA Reimaging Residency initiative. increase.

This innovation community works with the AMA to develop, implement and disseminate bold, innovative projects that drive systemic change to better train and prepare the doctors of the future.

Ultimately, through the ChangeMedEd initiative, the AMA will invest in and foster collaboration among a wide range of partners across the medical education continuum and across the healthcare ecosystem. Our shared goals and vision continue to inspire us to pursue innovations that drive change, reduce barriers to lifelong learning, promote health equity and improve patient outcomes.
