Dre Greenlow’s offseason thumb surgery keeps 49ers star out of OTAs

Dre Greenlaw proved to be one of the NFL’s top-line backers last season, and the 49ers star looks to build on that success in 2023.

But first we need some recovery.

Greenlaw told KNBR’s “Papa & Land” on Thursday that he had minor thumb surgery this offseason and won’t be much involved in the San Francisco organized team activities that began in Santa Clara last week.

“Yeah, no big deal,” said Mr. Greenlaw. “Keep your thumbs clean a little. [It] It was causing me some problems when punching the ball or whenever I had to use my hands on the O lineman. [My] My finger was really jammed and needed to be cleaned and repaired.

“It’s going very well right now, so I’m just waiting. Well, I think most of the time they’re going to keep me out of OTAs, just because you don’t want to get frustrated right now. But very well. I’m telling you.”

Greenlaw had a great season with the 49ers in 2022, leading San Francisco’s top defense with 82 solo tackles and finishing in the league’s top 20 in total tackles (127), just one short of an All-Pro selection. The season ended with no votes. After Greenlaw was denied Pro Bowl honors last season, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan believed it was one of the biggest snubs of the season.

The 26-year-old defender will continue his upward trajectory in 2023 under the 49ers’ new defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes. Alongside fellow defensive leader Fred Warner, Greenlaw contributed to a team that quickly became known as one of the strongest lineback duos in the league.

Greenlaw told Papa & Land that he is not participating in the OTA at this time, but has been at the team’s facility for the past two and a half months in preparation for next season. And once all has recovered, he will no doubt be looking to the rest of the league for attention.
