At least two people were killed and dozens injured when Russian forces attacked a medical facility in the city of Dnipro on Friday morning after heavy shelling in central Ukraine overnight.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force reportedly conducted airstrikes in Kiev and the Dnipropetrovsk region from 10 p.m. Thursday night to 5 a.m. Friday morning.

Air Force Command reported 17 cruise missiles and 31 “attack drones”, noting attacks using S-300/S-400 missile systems in the Dnipro and Kharkiv regions.

A CNN team on the ground witnessed emergency workers standing on top of a crane lowering a water hose over the wreckage while excavators cleared the debris from the site.

Dnipropetrov mayor Boris Filatov said fewer people were working at the facility at the time of the attack due to the change in doctors’ shifts.

“The shift changed the moment the rocket hit. I hope there are no more casualties,” Filatov told reporters at the hospital.

“It’s a miracle that the rocket hit at the exact moment the doctor was changing.” He added that there was an outpatient clinic when the attack occurred.

The mayor said the clinic is used to treat mentally ill patients and has an inpatient treatment facility.

The rocket attack also affected a veterinary clinic, where animals under treatment had to be dug out of the rubble, the clinic’s owner said.

“All the employees are in shock,” clinic owner Dr. Andriy Malyshko told Ukrainian television. “All the animals have been rescued from the burning building.”

The rocket hit the clinic around 10:30 a.m. local time, setting it on fire. Marishko said the clinic had a large number of dogs and a few cats, but they were all transferred to a nearby clinic.

Kiev and its Western allies condemned the Kremlin’s attack on central Ukraine and called for accountability for the attack by Russia.

France called them “war crimes” that “cannot go unpunished”, according to a statement from the French Foreign Ministry.

The ministry said the missile and drone strikes against Kiev and Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions “again deliberately targeted civilian targets” and “a grave violation of international humanitarian law”. .

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday: “Russian terrorists reaffirm that they are combatants against all things humane and honest.”

“The aftermath of the artillery fire is being cleared and casualties are being rescued. All necessary services are included,” he added.
