Dermatology Resident Wins Suvidha Memorial Scholarship Award – Medical School News


Wayne State University School of Medicine Dermatology Resident, Kayla St. Clair, MBA, was awarded the Peter Sweider Memorial Resident Scholarship Award.

This award is given annually to a graduating resident or researcher in a graduate medical education program in recognition of outstanding achievement in academic activity over the course of their residency. This award recognizes residents who have achieved high levels of academic productivity, reflecting the ideals of graduate medical education. Winners will receive a plaque and certificate from the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Medical Education.

Dr. St. Clair, who holds a medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois School of Business, is completing his residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. . She plans to participate in a Dermatopathology Fellowship at the University of Chicago in 2024.

She achieved high levels of academic productivity and demonstrated a strong commitment to academic medicine during her residency. Among her other accomplishments, she has authored or co-authored articles in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the British Academy of Dermatology, the Journal of the International Academy of Dermatology, the Journal of Dermatological Surgery, and the Journal of Clinical Pathology. She also authored a chapter on histology in Taylor and Kelly’s Dermatology for Skin of Color.

The award was named in recognition of the academic achievements, clinical excellence and camaraderie of Dr. Peter Svaider, who completed his residency at the WSU ENT in 2018. Dr. Suvaider has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and over eight chapters of the book. He died in 2021 at the age of 34.
