Denise J. Jamison, Professor James Robert McCord, Chair of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Emory Healthcare, Named Vice President for Medical Affairs and Director of Hospital Roy J. Jamison will replace Brooks Jackson. In February 2022, Jackson announced plans to return to the faculty and continue his research once his replacement is hired. Jackson held the role for six years.
In addition to his clinical leadership role since 2019, Jamison is also a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health in Emory. Her scientific research focuses on emerging infectious diseases during pregnancy and includes projects that address health disparities and social determinants of health related to maternal morbidity and other adverse pregnancy outcomes, including population health. incorporates the perspective of Dr. Jamison also practices obstetrics and gynecology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
From 1997 to 2017, Mr. Jamison worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), holding various leadership positions, most recently as Incident Manager, leading the CDC’s Zika emergency response. Upon her retirement from the U.S. Public Health Service as a Captain in July 2017, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the highest decoration given to an officer in the Special Forces Corps, for “reproductive and outstanding contributions to her health and public health practice.” Awarded.
“Dr. Jamieson’s rich and diverse experience will enable her to lead UI Healthcare as we partner with Iowa communities to expand access to healthcare,” said UI President. Barbara Wilson said. “I was particularly impressed with Dr. Jamison’s ability to bring people together and create a culture that supports everyone’s success within the organization.”
Jamieson was one of two candidates who participated in a campus visit earlier this month. The investigative committee was co-chaired by Matthew Howard, Chief of Neurosurgery and Divisional Executive Officer. and Edith Parker, Dean of the University of Public Health.
Executive Vice President and Chancellor Kevin Kregel said Jamison is an experienced and collaborative leader not only as a physician, but also as a communicator and problem solver.
“These attributes will be of paramount importance to Dr. Jamieson as he leads Carver College of Medicine and the academic medical system,” Kregel said. “She has an impressive research track record and extensive clinical expertise that will benefit the University of Iowa and the state of Iowa as a whole.”
Jamieson holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine, and an M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her graduate education in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco, where she graduated as an Epidemic Information Service (EIS) officer in the Reproductive Health Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2020.

Jamison’s appointment is pending the approval of the Iowa Regent.
