DEI: Strategic Priorities for AAMC and Academic Medicine


AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO David J. Scoton, M.D., Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer David A. Acosta, MD, sent the following open letter to member medical schools, teaching hospitals and health systems, and academic societies:

“Across the country, we face higher education and academic health institutions and continue to face misinformation, disinformation, and misguided anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) behavior that undermines the health of our communities. We want to emphasize that the AAMC is here to support your efforts to demonstrate leadership in the name of diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice. Your commitment and dedication to this work is important, recognized and admired.

The DEI efforts at your institution have a positive impact on the health of communities across the country. Over the decades, your hard work has ensured the recruitment and availability of talented learners from diverse classes, including medical students, graduate students, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and residents. We have continued to develop and provide the best evidence-based education possible. This is crucial for building the knowledge base and skills for all future physicians and scientists to improve the health of their patients and communities.

Your important task is to ensure that tomorrow’s doctors and other health professionals are culturally sensitive and conscious of the health care needs of society, including those living in historically marginalized and resource-poor communities. It will be ready for you to recognize it.

All of this is critical to achieving health equity for all communities in the country. We cannot afford to lose momentum for the progress we have made with the DEI initiative and for the further changes needed to achieve our vision of creating a healthier future for all.

The AAMC is firmly committed to working with you to address and reduce, if not eliminate, the factors that perpetuate health inequalities embedded in today’s healthcare and healthcare systems. . Together, we can create a future where all communities have an equal chance to thrive. ”
