David Kuo’s Fatty Mart Brings Market Groceries and Hot Food to Malvista

Now, Mr. Kuo is ready to transform that perspective into physical spaces: real markets, hot food bars, takeout counters, and eateries in establishments that bring all of his heart and enthusiasm into the real world. Mr. Kuo is no stranger to the Marvista dining scene, running the highly successful restaurant “Little Fatty” for years, selling comforting culinary appeal and flavorful Taiwanese classics. That means Kuo has plenty of time to gather data about what his customers want and think for himself how to serve those items as efficiently and deliciously as possible. . Fatty Mart is the culmination of all these thoughts and dreams, and far more than a food and grocery store in Taiwan, it will be the coolest culinary incubator and retail space in the city, if Mr. Kuo has his way. A space that combines multiple hyphens to be one of him.

The scale that Little Fatty brings can’t really be felt on the internet. The 5,000-square-foot space is best experienced by walking down the orange aisles lined with dry goods, packaged noodles, condiments and snacks. Along the walls are long cold cases filled with beverages, alcoholic or not, and crates and end caps filled with produce and other perishables. Shoppers can pick up ripe pineapples and pick up sandwiches and pizza (created in partnership with Slow Rise’s Noel Brohner) at lunchtime. There’s a dinner menu of whimsical curries and Taiwanese dishes (with reheating instructions), bento boxes and sandwiches for those who want it now, and a coffee and pastry bar for morning arrivals.

Design, the Bitches team (Verve, Button Mash, Superba) and Curato built a space with flow and purpose. At its edge is a hot bar station filled with Mexican food at Juntos Stand and Korean, Vietnamese and American food at K Fatty. All classic menus such as pizza and deli are put together by Mr. Kuo and culinary director James Lai (Republic). There’s also a small countertop pocket for cooking demonstrations or for guests to lean over for a draft beer. When you eat inside, you inevitably walk past the checkout counter to reach the airy patio dining at the front. It has his 45 seats for customers and some bright and airy murals. The graphic design and branding work was also done by him at Design, Bitches staff, managed by Arnold Byun (Maum Market) and the whole place he put together in one big package.

Of course, the real glue for Fatty Mart is Kuo. Not only is he on-site culinary director and owner, but he is also the primary purchaser of the products on the shelves and is the spokesperson and face of the project for his hundreds of thousands of followers. His enthusiasm for not only the food he serves but also the vendors and people who market it is undeniable. Now he’s got a real showcase to convey that enthusiasm to a very devoted audience. With a variety of menus (especially the hottest bars) coming online over the next few weeks, it will take time to have everything in place. At the moment we have a wide selection of drip coffees and pastries, pizzas and ready-to-go meals. The grocery store’s corner is also well stocked with products like Mehorado’s tortillas, Wanderlust’s ice cream, and Jean Isaac’s bread, so there’s no chance to force Kuo into a deep conversation about katsuobushi or instant his ramen.
