Manlius, NY — The first thing you see is an antique red tow truck. Once there, you can’t miss the giant beer cans.

Your journey to The Yard is just beginning. The Yard is a collection of old buildings and open spaces, including brewery taprooms, food trucks (and soon associated cafes), coffee roasters and local produce shops. From used household items to plants and glass crafts.

The project has been around for a few years, but got a big boost with the grand opening of the Singlecut Beersmith Taproom earlier this month. This has increased business across the four acre property just outside Manlius Village.

“People want food when they drink beer,” says Adam Jarosz, owner of Cafe Jarosz, a food truck parked near the SingleCut space. “A meal might make you want a beer. When you’re done, you might want to do a little shopping. This is the perfect space for all of that. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

The yard is located in a former sawmill at 604 E. Seneca St. (Hwy 173) about halfway between the village center and Fayetteville Manlius High School. Most of the grounds are surrounded by trees.

Owned and operated by John Freitenberg. He was the former owner of Ironwood Pizza in the village center, which he sold in 2020 and is now AW Wonder.

Freitenberg bought the land several years ago, largely because he liked the collection of old buildings dating back to the 1800s. In addition to the lumber yard, it also houses a manufacturing company.

“I didn’t want to see the building demolished, and I didn’t want it to just fall over,” said Freitenberg, who runs The Yard with his son Jeff. “I had to figure out what to put in there.

It began as what Freitenberg called a “craftsman’s hub” and has evolved. The yard is still under construction with space rentals and some construction/renovation planned.

SingleCut is probably the most watched work at the moment. Not only does it boast giant beer cans, but it also uses an 1830s barn as its tasting room, with nearby outdoor seating. A space in a nearby building has been prepared for use as a winter tasting room (the barn is not heated).

Our current hours of operation are Wednesday-Thursday 4-10pm, Friday 2-10pm, Saturday 12-10pm and Sunday 11-8pm. There is occasional live music, and the regular music in the tasting room comes from vinyl albums spinning on turntables.

The ever-changing beer list features IPAs from pilsners to stouts, and more, including Fuzzbox, a double dry-hopped IPA that debuts on Memorial Day weekend. In addition to about 20 types of draft beer, canned beer can also be taken home.

The taproom is the third location for SingleCut, a brewery that started in Astoria, Queens in 2012. The original brewery, located not far from Steinway Piano’s headquarters, has built a reputation for groundbreaking beer styles, often with names associated with them. Along with music production and performance.

In 2018, Singlecut owner Rich Buseta purchased the former Schmaltz brewing facility in Clifton Park, north of Albany, Saratoga County. The move allowed Buseta to have a larger production space and its first taproom in upstate New York.

Manlius’ Single Cut Taproom opened briefly last fall and then remained open through the winter, releasing occasional cans for pickup.

“The weather is good right now and people are ready to go out,” said Taproom General Manager Sarah Crowe. “And for now the outside is flooded.”

Across from the outdoor seating area stands the Café Jaros food truck. Owner Adam Jarosh is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and runs a food program in the FM school district.

The menu ranges from lobster rolls to paninis, includes vegetarian and gluten-free options, and is heavily influenced by Yarosh’s hometown of Utica (veggies, riggies, and more).

“I’m interested in cooking and if I can make it in the kitchen here, I’ll try it,” Yarosh said.

Jarosz is working to fill a small space in a building next door that once housed a cafe with a similar concept. It is expected to operate throughout the year.

But there’s more to The Yard than just food and drink. Downstairs in the building that houses Jarosz Cafe is Newish, a store that specializes in what owner Jennifer Pena calls “household goods rescue.”

Pena spends part of her time scouting real estate and yard sales for home items, from furniture to china sets, and things she can put away and resell. “We have items here ranging from $3 to $300,” Pena said.

She sold a lot of plant stands and vases for Mother’s Day, but will be stocking vintage fishing and outdoor gear for Father’s Day.

She said being at The Yard gives her store more exposure than anywhere else.

“On Mother’s Day, there were a lot of kids running past[from the eating area],” she said. “And mom came after them, slowed her down and turned (towards the store) and said, ‘Wait.'” What was that? “

A little further into the grounds is the building where Skytop Coffee of Manlius is roasted, Eugenia’s, an old-fashioned general store that mainly sells local foods and sundries, and The Combustion Chamber, which sells glass art. There is a store called And a plant store called Rooted Wildings.

Eugenia’s General Store specializes in local products from Central New York and other parts of the state, including Hunter & Hillsburg jams and jams, New Hope Mills pancake mixes and baking ingredients, and Tom’s Bootleg BBQ Sauce. is. They also sell Skytop Coffee, which is roasted throughout the hall.

“I’ve always wanted to have a little shop like this,” said Mike Mordwinkin, who named Eugenia’s after his grandmother, a Russian immigrant. “When I heard what John[Freitenberg]had in mind, I thought it would be a good fit.”

Yard owner John Freitenberg said more space will be filled once the renovations are complete. I can still afford it.

But it already satisfies many needs.

“There’s so much to see here,” said Singlecut Brewery’s taproom manager Sarah Crowe. “Some weeks my paycheck doesn’t come out of the yard.”
