Cases of chronic pain outnumber other complications such as diabetes and depression

Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 adults in the United States, and that number is increasing each year.

Entire medical practices and treatments are devoted to addressing this problem.

Because it has become one of the most common health conditions.

Dena Marie Blauvelt, mother of a toddler, rarely lifts her leg.

But two weeks ago she had a total knee replacement.

“There were two days when I couldn’t even move,” Blaubert said.

She was put under the knife after years of living in unimaginable pain.

“So I have psoriatic arthritis, which is very painful arthritis where psoriasis gets into the joints and attacks them. So it’s compounded by meniscus damage.” said Blaubert.

Blauwerth knows suffering. She is a certified massage therapist on both sides of the continuum of pain.

“I see a lot of people in pain, suffering from autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, excessive swelling,” she says. “My specialty is lymphatic drainage. That’s my niche. Some people are feeling it.”

New cases of chronic pain are putting pressure on some of the country’s most common medical conditions, including depression, diabetes and hypertension.

And there are no easy solutions.

The National Institutes of Health released a study this week looking at giant pain.

Of the 1,000 people, 52 will be diagnosed with chronic pain, while 16 will be diagnosed with depression, 7 with diabetes, and 45 with hypertension.

Worse, those who suffer from pain tend to remain in pain for at least a year.

This is a major health issue as we are dealing with the opioid crisis.

So people end up reaching for over-the-counter drugs along with remedies and cures.

Doctors say early intervention can make a big difference.

Blauwert can sympathize with that.

“Massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, anything you can do to feel better will go a long way,” she said.
