Bonner General Health votes to end maternity services

Bonner County, Idaho — In a Facebook post, Bonner General Health (BGH) announced it will no longer provide maternity services.

BGH cited loss of pediatrician coverage, a changing demographic volume, and Idaho’s legal and political climate as the primary reasons behind this decision.

According to the BGH, it is unsafe and unethical to provide routine labor and delivery services without compensating pediatricians who manage neonatal resuscitation and perinatal care. In addition, the number of deliveries at BGH continues to decline each year. BGH said in 2022 he had 265 babies and had fewer than 10 pediatric patients hospitalized for other reasons.

Finally, a respected and talented doctor leaves BGH as the Idaho legislature passes a bill to “criminalize doctors for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care.”

Ultimately, BGH said patient safety was at the heart of the decision.
