Attorney General Tong Statement on Russian Sanctions
(Hartford, Conn.) – Attorney General William Tong condemned the Jan. 6 riots and defended the legitimacy of the 2020 election against baseless legal challenges. In response to the news that he was banned from entering Russia and subject to economic restrictions, he issued the following statement: .
Attorney General Tong has received no formal notice or explanation from Russia other than reports of the action. The New York Times, citing a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, said the targets were “government and law enforcement personnel directly involved in the persecution of dissidents following the so-called attack on the Reichstag.”
“I will take every opportunity to defend our country and our democracy from insurrection and agitation. To the best of my knowledge, those of us on this list were targeted by Trump and his attempts to overthrow the election and violently seize power in government. , because he stood up to the terrorists and traitors he helped.” Attorney General Ton said. “The Russian government’s sanctions against the Attorney General of Connecticut are certainly beyond absurd. But the action is also an attempt by the Putin administration to justify its brutal war against the Ukrainian people. It reflects how desperate they are to instill disinformation at every level of government in America, and support their pro-Russian puppets and assets in our country.”
