(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein announced today that 150,074 North Carolinians who were tricked by TurboTax into using free tax services will start receiving checks from TurboTax owner Intuit. The payment is the result of a $141 million multistate settlement that Attorney General Stein agreed with Intuit in May 2022. The North Carolina consumer will receive $4,582,249 million from this settlement.

Recipients do not need to apply. Eligible North Carolina residents will be contacted by email from Settlement Fund Administrator, Rust Consulting, and checks will be mailed during May 2023.

“We are pleased to see more than 150,000 North Carolinians recover the money they were tricked into paying their taxes,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “My office holds an accountable business when they cheat people to make money.”

Attorney General Stein was a member of the state executive committee investigating Intuit, along with Attorneys General from New York, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington. In 2022, he and all 50 states and the District of Columbia reached an agreement with TurboTax to trick people into paying for tax services that are supposed to be free.

Eligible consumers have paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 tax years and were eligible to file free through the IRS Free File Program. It is included. The amount each consumer receives is based on the applicable tax years. Most consumers expect to receive between $29 and $30.
