Houston Astros right-hander Luis Garcia underwent surgery on his right elbow Friday, general manager Dana Brown announced.
Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, or Tommy John surgery, means Garcia will miss the rest of the 2023 season and is expected to return at some point in the 2024 season.
Garcia left the starting lineup after just eight pitches in a home game against the San Francisco Giants on May 1, placing him on the disabled list for the first time in his major and minor league careers.
Garcia has appeared in six games this season (all starts) and has a 2-2 record with a 4.00 ERA, 31 strikeouts, 10 walks and 25 hits in 27 innings. He’s all for the Astros, going 28-19 with a 3.61 ERA in 352 innings in 69 games (63 starts).
The 26-year-old finished second in the 2021 American League Rookie of the Year voting, going 11-8 with a 3.48 ERA in 30 games (28 starts).
The Astros’ rotation no longer has Lance McCullers Jr., but he hasn’t pitched this season due to a sore forearm. Right-handed starter Jose Urchidi has been out for 15 days with a shoulder injury and said Friday he hopes to return to pitching next week, the Houston Chronicle reported.
