ALBANNY — A seven-member delegation from Adirondack Voters for Change took part in a mass demonstration organized by Compassion and Choices at the New York State Capitol on Monday to demand passage of New York’s Dying Medical Assistance Act.
Sixty-five people dressed in black and bright yellow belts marched through the Legislative Building, holding signs to mark the eight years since the bill was introduced into the legislature.
Supporters who died in the years seeking relief from suffering were also commemorated with autographs. AVfC protesters included Nancy Murphy, Jim Avendros, Ginger Slater, Colleen Corrigan, Suzanne Gold, Carolyn Wigen, and Karrie Johnson.
The Medical Aid in Dying Act allows terminally ill and mentally competent adults to legally obtain a prescription from a doctor to end their lives whenever and wherever they choose.
This year, the law was introduced by both the House and Senate. They are currently awaiting votes on their respective health committees.
There are 16 co-hosts in the Senate and 61 in the House.
