Al Roker Updates on Knee Replacement Surgery on Today’s Live Stream

Al Roker is on the road to recovery!

Al made a video call to TODAY on May 15th to report on his progress since undergoing total knee replacement surgery on May 9th and is currently recuperating at home.

“It’s tough,” Al said. “This was a so-called revision, so it was a little more complicated. This was a replacement replacement, so it was a little more difficult because we had to remove parts and put new parts in.”

Al was already walking the corridors of the New York City Special Surgery Hospital the day after surgery, but has been resting well since returning home.

“I was just hanging out for a while,” he said. “I’m just sitting around doing nothing. I know a lot of people don’t believe it, but it’s true.”

He said he plans to spend three days a week in rehab for “a few months” to get back in shape for “Poker Face” and “The Mandalorian.” He also gave his outlook on his return to TODAY.

“Hopefully we’ll be back in the next two weeks,” he said. “I just play it by ear every day. That’s it. Yeah, I know, I’m not going to rush back before I need it.”

Given Al’s condition, it’s “impractical” to go out to his favorite restaurant, so he enjoyed a low-key Mother’s Day for his wife, Deborah Roberts, after deciding to order a quiche.

Al, too, is enjoying his son Nick’s return from college after Deborah helped him tidy up his dorm room for Mother’s Day.

“Nick just got home from school, so it’s been great,” Al said. “Until I heard him click into the peloton in the next room. I was hoping the memory slowed him down a bit.”

Al had another knee replacement surgery in April 2022, making it his second knee replacement surgery in two years.

By August 2022, he had completed 200 consecutive days of 10,000 steps and even walked the Brooklyn Half Marathon. In his March of this year, Al celebrated his “best day ever” by hitting his record of over 13,600 steps in a day.
