Al Roker surprises co-host after knee surgery

Less than a month after knee replacement surgery, TODAY’s Al Roker surprised co-hosts with a cameo on Thursday.

During today’s third hour of the National Wine Day segment, Al came out of the backstage, walking out with a cane and laughing.

“Jesus Christ!” cried Craig Melvin as Dylan Dreyer yelled “No!”

Shenelle Jones seemed to be in shock as Al walked towards her with a wide smile and a hug along the way.

The hosts reacted to the surprise in another corner, with Craig summing up the moment by saying, “Al Roker, he blew us away with a little surprise pop-in.”

“We didn’t expect that — obviously,” added Craig.

Sheinel said the hosts were hoping to see him later in the day, but the show didn’t make it live.

Today’s weather forecaster underwent a total knee replacement on May 9. Al, 68, said in a May 15 video call that she had a total knee replacement 23 years ago.

“This was a so-called revision, so it’s a little more complicated. It was a replacement, so it was a little more difficult because you had to take parts out and put new ones in,” he said. .

Al told organizers he was walking the day after surgery but was trying to rest and relax at home.

“I was just hanging out for a while,” he said. “I’m just sitting around doing nothing. I know a lot of people don’t believe this, but it’s true.”

He shared an x-ray of his knee in a separate video call on TODAY on May 23rd.

“To be honest, I’ve done a lot of body swaps in the past. No big surprise, but this one was the hardest ever. We had to remove the old body, which created some complications. There was,’ and put in a new one,’ he said.

“There’s a hinge that goes from the femur to the tibia, and there’s a hinge in between,” he continued. “So it was really a lot of work to get the old one out and put the new hardware in. Plus, there’s a titanium cone in there to grow the bone in. So this It needed a lot more work.”

Al said the surgery wasn’t easy, but he was feeling good, so he cooked in the kitchen and posted it on Instagram, but the doctor was very disappointed.

“The doctor saw my Instagram and said, ‘No, I didn’t do that,'” Al said with a laugh. “So it’s really about not moving the knee, but the ice and getting the knee up.”

Al added that he plans to do rehabilitation three days a week to regain his walking habits.

Craig said on May 25 that Al will be returning to the show next week. “It was just a small harbinger of what we could expect,” Craig said of her pleasant surprise of Al.
