Bissau, May 12, 2023 – Africa CDC Executive Director Dr. Jean Caseya, who arrived in Guinea-Bissau from the Comoros on 12 May 2023, paid a courtesy call on the same day to H.E. Bissau.

President Embalo welcomed Dr. Jean Kaseya of Bissau and his delegation, renewing his determination to support the Africa CDC as the African Union’s autonomous public health agency in addressing health threats across the African continent. President Embalo called for a high-level discussion on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response to be held at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2023, in line with Africa’s common position in the debate on global health challenges, in particular Agenda 2063 and Africa’s New Public. Dr. Jean Caseya praised President Embalo’s outstanding leadership in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a positive impact not only on Guinea-Bissau, but also on other African countries.

In the context of climate change and One Health, Dr. Kaseya shared his vision of Africa with efficient, digitalized health systems capable of preventing and responding to pandemics and epidemics. President Embalo and Dr. Kaseya agreed on the importance of innovative funding initiatives to achieve financial sustainability for Africa CDC and African health systems.

On May 13, 2023, Dr. Jean Kaseya attended the 24th ECOWAS Health Ministers’ Meeting focusing on the right health workforce for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Dr. Jean Kaseya shares that only 10% of African countries currently have sufficient human resources with the technical expertise needed to effectively prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
